Lab Policies
Most of the general policies for the labs are described
on the TA contract and on the general
lab policies for students. Below you will find some especific
policies and answers to frequently asked questions. If you have
any questions that are not answered here, please contact
the Physics Lab Office.
I have a student from another section in my lab.
She/he is making up a missed lab. What do I do?
The student should join your group of students. It
is your responsibility to grade all the in-class work and the pre-lab
work that this student produces and get the graded work to the TA
in the student's usual section. If a lab report is due that week,
the student must make arrangements with her/his own TA as to how/when
deliver the lab report.
Remember that students can only make up the lab from
the current week.
There is a student on my roster that has never showed
up to class. What's with that?
Sometimes students will register for a section and
then change their section or their schedule without dropping their
original courses. The best way to find out is to email the student
and ask her/him directly.
I suspect plagiarism. What do I do?
Ugh. That's an ugly question no matter what. According
to the Student
Code, the student should receive a zero for that particular
assignment and then re-do the assignment for no grade or credit,
showing original work. If the infraction is on something major,
like a lab final, you can consider giving a zero grade for the entire
course. You should also send a letter to the Dean's
Office, the student, and the course instructor, with Dr.
Best's signature on it.
Unfortunately, plagiarism is a complex thing, and
students will cheat and/or copy work for a variety of reasons. This
makes it difficult for us to establish a hard-down policy because
the circumstances are different for every case. You are strongly
encouraged to talk to Judicial Affairs (email
Cathy Cocks, Head of Judicial Affairs) at the
Dean's Student Affairs Office- consultations are confidential
and ultimately you make the decision.
Some resources around academic misconduct:
I can't teach my lab this (or next, or in a few) weeks. What should
I do?
It is your responsibility to find a substitute. Talk to your fellow
TAs- generally they'll help you out. Generally they'll take a section
of yours this week if you take one of their sections next week-
or something along those lines. If you're having problems finding
someone, please contact the Lab Office
as soon as possible.
An emergency came up. I have lab in less than 24 hours and I won't
be able to teach. What should I do?
Contact the Lab Office immediately!
