This talk will discuss some recent advances in Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) based optoelectronics, including novel long wavelength VCSELs for 10 Gb/s Ethernet and Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing applications, and progress towards photonic integration of high capacity optical interconnects based on wavelength-multiplexed VCSEL arrays.
Biography: Professor Julian Cheng (M.S., MIT; Ph.D., Harvard University) currently holds the Cockrell Regents Chair in Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas in Austin. He has thirty years of combined academic and industrial experience in optoelectronics and optical communication technology. He has been a research scientist at Bell Labs, a technical manager in AT&T’s Lightwave Division, Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of New Mexico, Senior Manager at JDS-Uniphase, Vice President of R&D at E2O Communications Inc., and Vice President of Engineering at Opticomp Corporation.
