While not required by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, undergraduate research is an effective way to learn how real-world physics is done and to show potential graduate schools and employers that you are serious about physics.
Whether it is for credit or work-study, an undergraduate has to be extremely motivated to take on a semester of research in addition to their usual coursework. It is only appropriate that something that requires so much determination from the student also requires initiative to get started. This is the reason there is no existing online Peoplesoft mechanism to register for research. You need to show the professors you are interested in working for them by going to their group page, read about what they do, and contact them to show you are interested in doing undergraduate work. Professors do not advertise openings for undergraduate work; you have to ask them yourself.
