Electron spin resonance and optical techniques are used to study impurity ions and defects formed during exposure to radiation in a variety of optical materials. An understanding of the defects formed and the influence they have on the physical properties of these materials, plays an important role in practical applications involving acousto-optic, electro-optic, scintillation, laser and various other optical processes.
