UConn Physics Colloquium

New Variants and Old Issues of the Casimir Effect

Professor Shmuel Nussinov
Department of Physics
Tel Aviv University

A simple intuitive presentation of the Casimir force as one of (many) medium induced forces is given. A new variant of the effect where each of the parallel plates conducts in a different direction and its exact evaluation for any angle between these directions as well as a qualitative discussion of the feasibility of measuring it are presented. Finally we make some comments on the (attractive) sign of the effect.
