Confinement and Monopoles (or not?)

I discuss the popular idea that the dynamical reason for confinement in nonabelian gauge theories is condensation of the carriers of magnetic charge: magnetic monopoles. Some questions hovering over this picture are pointed out. In particular I prove a "folk theorem" that states that in the pure SU(2) Yang Mills theory magnetic charge does not exist as a physical observable. I also show how to set up a pertrubative calculation of the VEV of the monopole field operator in perturbation theory and discuss the result of such a calculation.
